City Hall Shanghai

The Shanghai City Hall project, with an expressive cultural history, aims to unify a currently fragmented series of significant historic buildings by completing the unfinished masterplan designed 100 years ago.

In fact, the buildings are spread along a large open central space, a rare moment in the dense city fabric of Shanghai.

The project extends these existing conditions to imagine a large public courtyard defined by the silhouette of the existing building and a new extension. The courtyard is characterised by the reconstruction of the iconic Music Hall and restoration of the Red building.

The Shanghai City Hall extends the original functions of the historic buildings to promote an active public ground floor and define a lively central courtyard.
